A Student Farm Field Technician will be heavily involved in the day-to-day operations of the Farm. The Student Farm's focus is the production of high-quality vegetables that will be donated to Our Daily Bread, Stillwater's local food and resource center. As an intern the applicant will have a unique opportunity to have firsthand knowledge of producing vegetables on a large scale. This will include everything from starting seeds, to planting them out, harvesting and delivery of the finished product. The applicant will have direct knowledge on a variety of vegetable crops that grow well in Oklahoma and their production practices.
Day-to-day activities may include harvesting and washing produce, scouting for insects and disease, trellising plants, checking irrigation (drip and overhead), fertilization, weeding rows, mowing, managing compost and general upkeep.
A student intern will learn how farming equipment is utilized. Willing applicants will have the opportunity to learn how to properly drive and operate a tractor with its various implements. Items such as a tiller, flail mower, water wheel transplanter, brush mower, and bed shaper/mulch layer are heavily utilized at the Student Farm. Various types of hand tools will be used as well such as hoes, shovels, and small pruners. Proper training on safety, use, and maintenance of all equipment will be given and put into practice.
Workdays are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with limited weekend availability. Student employees will be instructed on what clothing will be appropriate for each season: gloves, rubber boots and any appropriate PPE will be provided. Water and restroom facilities will be provided in an office/farmhouse on the premises.
A Student Farm Intern will have the opportunity to work extensively on a special project while at the Farm. Special projects will include creating a composting program and how to produce a healthy useable product. Assisting in vegetable research that will be conducted by graduate level students, which may include how to set up the experiment, how to manage the crops, taking/interpreting data. Post harvest protocols, implementation and management. Working directly with graduate level students will give InternOSU applicants insight into postgrad research and work.
