American Shorthorn Association & American Junior Shorthorn Association Internships

The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) and the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) are seeking THREE enthusiastic, motivated students to join our team as 2026 summer interns. This is more than just a summer job—it’s an opportunity to gain handson training and professional experience within a breed association while helping execute one of the premier youth livestock events in the country: the National Junior Shorthorn Show (NJSS).


Interns will be fully immersed in all aspects of event planning and execution. From organizing contests and youth activities, to producing creative communications and managing social media, to preparing exhibitor materials and coordinating show logistics— you’ll gain practical experience in event management, agricultural communications, marketing, and youth development.


Working alongside ASA and AJSA staff, interns will:

  • Assist with planning and executing the NJSS, including registration, contests, shows, and ceremonies.

  • Gain experience in writing press releases, media outreach, photography, videography, and design.

  • Take the lead on projects such as social media management, exhibitor publications, signage, awards, and youth programming.

  • Collaborate with the junior board, committees, and staff to ensure the event runs smoothly.

  • Witness firsthand how a national livestock event is organized—while playing a vital role in its success.


Qualifications (applicable to all interns unless otherwise specified):

  • Junior/ senior in college or grad students. All students are encouraged to apply. (Agricultural degree)

  • Livestock or agricultural background strongly encouraged.

  • Interest in pursuing a career in agriculture, communications, event planning, or youth programs.

  • Self-motivated, professional, detail-oriented, and energetic.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Word & Excel)

  • Marketing & Communications intern will need Adobe, design, public relations and writing skills

  • Travel to NJSS is required (2026 location: Abilene, Texas).

  • Internship will be based in Kansas City, MO (at the ASA office).

  • Dates are flexible based on school schedules (typically May through late July).


Additional Details

  • Compensation: $3,000 per month (pre-tax, paid biweekly).

  • Housing is the intern’s responsibility, although ASA will assist in finding options.
