The Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering seeks a marketing and communications specialist to create engaging content for various digital platforms and print materials. The specialist will use strong writing, editing and content prioritization skills to help support the department’s strategic marketing and communications plan. Responsibilities will focus on written content including news stories and features, announcements, brochure and advertising copy as well as content for websites, social media platforms and email communication pieces to support advancing the department’s strategic goals and improve overall visibility.
This specialist is a great storyteller with the ability to make complex content relatable for intended audiences, including current and prospective students, alumni and friends, stakeholders and donors. The individual will be heavily involved in planning and populating the department’s social media calendar with messages for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more that share meaningful activities, successes, and recognitions. Monitoring social media accounts and engaging with audiences when appropriate will be required. This individual should also demonstrate an understanding of current strategic communications and an adaptable writing style. In working with faculty, staff, and students that operate across multiple missions and subject areas, this individual should be a team player and a strong relationship builder who demonstrates a strong work ethic, self-direction, creativity and strategic thinking.
The specialist will develop and maintain recruitment and marketing materials to recruit prospective undergraduate and graduate students into the department and highlight both the engineering and technology degree programs. As needed, assist with daily office operations including answering phones, responding to email, greeting and providing counsel to prospective students. Evening activities and some weekends, while infrequent, may be required.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor’s Degree in Ag Communications, Strategic Communications, Marketing, or a closely related field. 3 years working experience or internship in communications. Have meaningful experiences with editing, proofreading, photography, videography, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite. Valid driver’s license. Reliable transportation for travel connected with official duties. *There will be reimbursement for official travel. Demonstrated experience in communications, including, but not limited to writing, editing, social media, video, web, and content creations. Excellent writing skills, verbal communication and technical skills are required. Excellent organization skills and attention to detail are essential. Photography and videography skills. Experience in multi-channel content creation. Must be an excellent editor and proofreader; knowledge of appropriate style guides. Proficiency and experience creating content for social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), email marketing service platforms (Constant Contact, Mailchimp, or similar), and analytics (Google, Hootsuite, Sprout Social). Ability to work independently and collaboratively in group settings with a positive can-do demeanor. Ability to handle multiple projects at a given time and to establish and meet deadlines in a productive manner; attention to detail is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors in Ag Communications, Strategic Communications, Marketing, or a closely related field. Five years of working experience with media, newspaper articles, video, photography, graphic design, advertising, website editing, and the general public. Skilled in building communication flows and execution. Work with printing vendors, writing specifications and managing print projects. Demonstrated background in sending bulk mail. Strong writing and editing background. Knowledge of Associated Press style writing as well as technical writing. Experience in graphic design (Adobe Creative Suites package preferred), advertising and social media strategy. Skilled at creating email and presentation templates. Trained in website editing and email management. Proficient in videography and video editing. Experience holding focus groups and making appropriate decisions based on reported findings. Skilled in photography. Experience with implementing social media strategy and brand marketing. Experience writing content for websites with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) knowledge. Experience using Omni Update or other Content Management System (CMS) to maintain websites. Knowledge of trends in social media and the ability to anticipate audience needs with continually evolving digital strategy.
