Communication Specialist - North Dakota State University

Position Information

The person in this role will help NDSU Agriculture tell the story and communicate the value of its research, teaching and extension efforts. As an editor for NDSU Agriculture, the communication specialist will shape impactful content for diverse audiences, from scientific communities to the general public. The communication specialist will collaborate with authors, designers, and other team members to edit, revise and produce a variety of content across digital and traditional platforms. The person in this role will help NDSU Agriculture tell the story and communicate the value of its research, teaching and extension efforts. The communication specialist will collaborate with authors, designers, and other team members to edit, revise and produce a variety of content across digital and traditional platforms. 


Edit Content for NDSU Agriculture:

  • Proofread and edit a wide range of content, including research reports, educational materials, event programs, brochures and other written material to ensure it is grammatically correct, free of errors and is consistent with style and tone. 

  • Assist with editing and assembling of internal communications.

  • Consult with internal clients on project expectations to reach intended audiences and create desired impact.

  • Help NDSU Agriculture faculty, staff and administration improve their written communication.

  • Manage projects to meet deadlines and prioritize work through project management system.

  • Collaborate with authors, designers, social media specialists, web specialists and other Agriculture Communication staff involved in the publication and distribution of content through digital and traditional formats. 


Write and edit news releases and feature stories:

  • Write and edit news and feature releases and impact summaries of NDSU Agriculture's work.

  • Collaborate on the development of the quarterly For the Land and Its People newsletter, from story ideas through publication. 

  • Research, interview, write, edit, coordinate graphics and distribute stories for media, targeted publications and other outlets.

  • Take part in meetings, committees, conferences, etc., to develop relationships with faculty and staff and get ideas for news and feature stories.

  • Collaborate with other communication specialist on media relations efforts and news placements. 


Maintain skills and share expertise:

  • Take part in professional development opportunities to improve skills and stay up-to-date on new developments in technical writing and editing both for digital and traditional formats.

  • Develop and present training on communication topics in areas and expertise. 


Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with room for flexibility


Advertised Salary: $48,000+ (based on experience)


Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, English or other relevant field.

  • Exceptional editing skills.

  • Familiarity with newswriting and Associated Press style.

  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.

  • Attention to detail. 

  • Ability to manage competing demands and complete projects on a deadline.

  • Excellent written and oral communication.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community.

  • Professional client relations.

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Five years work experience in written communication. 

  • Project management experience.
