Job Description

Texas Monthly Studio is seeking an enthusiastic and highly-motivated Senior Designer, based in Austin, to join our creative services team. Reporting to our Director of Operations, you will be part of the Studio, working alongside our team of creatives, project managers, developers, and marketing managers. In this role, you will lead the visual ideas, design execution and delivery of innovative multi-platform experiences that help brands engage and inform audiences across Texas Monthly. You will be responsible for leading the day-to-day visual development and delivery of advertising campaigns, ensuring work is designed at high standards across digital, video, audio, social, print, and events.

Responsibilities

  • Take full ownership of design and art direction concepts and execution of 360 campaigns, ensuring high-quality visual storytelling across digital, social, video, print, and events.

  • Design and adapt campaign creative across paid, owned and earned channels, including digital, social, and email, in line with Texas Monthly brand standards.

  • Confidently present and communicate design ideas to clients and internal stakeholders, translating client KPIs into elegant and high-end visual storytelling solutions.

  • Collaborate closely with the Studio team to help translate their ideas into engaging visual storytelling.

  • Collaborate with, and solicit feedback from, internal team members to ensure design work exceeds expectations and is created in a timely and collaborative manner.

  • Work closely with our Product team to ensure accurate and efficient build of digital designs across platforms. Also, lead and execute page builds for client projects using Webflow.

  • Identify and manage project deliverables from external talent including illustrators, photographers and motion designers.

  • Proactively identify and implement solutions to improve our design processes and workflows.

  • Develop and employ a deep understanding of Texas Monthly Advertising products and Texas Monthly Studio.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of graphic design and/or art direction experience at an advertising agency, digital agency, studio or in-house team, with a focus on marketing or advertising creative.

  • A., B.F.A. or M.F.A. in graphic design, visual communication or another related design discipline — or equivalent professional experience and portfolio that demonstrates comparable design training and craft.

  • A strong portfolio of brand work that demonstrates high-quality design and attention to detail, a refined sense of craft, typography, pacing and visual hierarchy.

  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and Webflow or comparable development platform.

  • Experience leading design projects end-to-end that incorporate photography, illustrations, text, audio, and video while collaborating with editorial, strategy and/or production teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Editorial and visual storytelling experience, with the ability to translate complex narratives into simpler, compelling visual experiences.

  • Experience in brand storytelling, digital marketing, content strategy, or copywriting.

  • Enthusiasm for designing and making great branded experiences for Texas Monthly Events.

  • A belief in the value of journalism, and genuine curiosity about Texas, our work and company. Ideally, you enjoy reading, watching, and listening to Texas Monthly journalism and products.

In-Office and Travel Policy

  • This onsite position offers the opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic team in a vibrant work environment. One remote workday per week is permitted, excluding Mondays.

  • Little travel required. Examples include participation required for in-person Texas Monthly events such as BBQ Fest, TCR Fest, and Taco Fest.

Application Process

If you are a qualified candidate and interested in this position, we encourage you to apply. Please email a cover letter, resume, and link to portfolio to resumes@texasmonthly.com with the job title in the subject line. Final candidates will be asked to perform an authentic task designated by the hiring manager.
