The primary purpose of the OAEC Cooperative Internship is to provide a student interested in the cooperative form of business and/or cooperative careers with some experience and knowledge on the management and operations of a rural electric cooperative. This internship experience focuses on youth programs, organized and executed by OAEC and Oklahoma’s Electric Cooperatives.
The intern is expected to participate in a variety of activities as specified by OAEC, focusing on the preparation and organization of summer youth programs. The duties require involvement in management, member services and training activities as well as physical activity. The intern must be able to work effectively with co-workers and to interact with members and the general public. The intern may have the opportunity to work for short periods of time (+, - week) at Rural Electric Cooperatives across the state. This will be at the discretion of OAEC and the participating cooperatives. Travel and housing provisions must be considered.
Requirements/Eligibility
Sophomore classification by Fall 2023 Enrolled in the College of Ag Sciences & Natural Resources Have at least 1 semester remaining prior to graduation Declared major of AGEC, AGCM, AGLE, BAE or related major* *preference given to applicants who have completed AGEC 3463 “Ag Co-ops”
Internship Schedule (4 components)
1 – Energy Camp prep May 22-26, 2023 (5/23 required) pick 2 days | M-F | 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. OAEC Office (2325 E. I-44 Service Rd – OKC) Receive $250 upon completion.
2 – Energy Camp Intern/Counselor May 30-June 2, 2023 T-F | attend and help facilitate Energy Camp Canyon Camp, near Hinton, Okla. Receive $500 upon completion.
3 – Youth Tour prep June 5-9, 2023 or June 12-16, 2023 pick 3 days | M-F | 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. OAEC Office (2325 E. I-44 Service Rd – OKC) Receive $250 upon completion.
4 – 50 hours of service at local distribution cooperative remainder of summer days/hours worked out between intern and participating cooperative Receive $250 upon completion of 25 hours, until 50-hour total met

For example, for AGEC students … enroll in AGEC 3010 for Fall 2023 & observe the respective deadlines for: completed intern report to Dr. Kenkel completed student evaluation of internship experience & request internship coordinator to complete internship performance review
