The Smithfield Corporate Affairs team is looking for a talented policy researcher, analyst and writer, with extraordinary project management and communication skills, who is poised for growth into strategic governmental advocacy to serve as our next Government Relations Manager. This newly created position is designed to help Smithfield more deeply engage in public policy and public affairs at the state and local levels of government in the State of North Carolina. The Government Affairs Manager position is remote, but the successful candidate will reside in North Carolina and have easy access to the state capitol. The successful candidate will be a direct report to the Vice President of Corporate Affairs, and will work closely with other senior leaders, directors and managers.


Core Responsibilities

  • Researching and mapping existing legislative & regulatory frameworks of importance to Smithfield

  • Analyzing and responding to legislation and regulation

  • Anticipating, identifying and communicating potential impacts of emerging regulations and legislation to Smithfield leadership

  • Planning, scheduling and managing multiple time-sensitive research and analysis projects

  • Managing a portfolio of issues and driving legislative and regulatory policy campaigns to positive conclusions

  • Working with appropriate external consulting resources to ensure the proper focus on specific issues or ongoing relationship development

  • Coordinating closely with operational teams to help them be successful through government affairs activity

  • Developing reports, tools, key performance indicators, etc. related to government affairs activities and outcomes

  • Supporting compliance related to ethics and lobbying activity
