Position Summary:

The Communications Specialist is a key member of the Strategic Communications team who informs the public about the impacts of UC ANR research, extension and education through news writing, media relations and development of digital and multimedia communication products. Along with writing and promoting search-friendly stories about the important work UC ANR does to improve the lives of Californians, this position applies their skills as an experienced digital communications professional to support UC ANR websites and social media platforms. This role is a storyteller and news writer with comprehensive skills in digital communications and a passion for improving lives.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

Annual Salary:

Min $65,200.00/yr. to Mid $93,200.00/yr.

Key Responsibilities:


Works with academics and other UC ANR personnel, including student interns, to produce news stories, blog posts, social media posts, videos, podcasts and other communication products that promote the work of UC ANR in Southern California. Conceptualizes and implements campaigns to reach underserved California communities with UC ANR news and research-based information. Writes news releases, responds to media inquiries, identifies and pitches stories to publicize the benefits of UC ANR research and education. Provides media relations training for UC ANR academics.


Supports the Social Media Strategist in developing and implementing UC ANR’s social media strategy in Southern California and in training academics and staff to leverage social media.


Produces content, layout and information architecture for web pages managed by Strategic Communications. Ensures technical accuracy, accessibility and readability of web content. Contributes to development of division wide website strategy. Uses analytical tools to measure and report on web traffic. Supports the Strat Comm team in maintaining editorial calendars, managing projects and maintaining image and video libraries.

Special Conditions of Employment:

Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Four years of experience as a professional communicator or journalist.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in media relations and writing public relations/news content.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in media relations and writing public relations/news content.

  • Skills and experience in growing the social media footprint of an organization and knowledge of best practices in social media management.

  • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills. Maintains solid consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external stakeholders; ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships within and across organizational units, especially those working with urban and rural underserved communities.

  • Experience in effectively communicating with diverse California audiences and underserved communities.

  • Maintains currency with communication trends and best practices and with emerging and state-of-the-art technical and other web-related equipment, requirements and developments.

  • Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well designed, and functional web content that is consistent with the organization's mission and strategic objectives.

  • Thorough skills to work independently and in teams to develop and implement original ideas, correctly identify and effectively solve problems, and achieve goals.

  • Understanding of methods and best practices to reach target audiences in California with UC ANR information.

  • Solid writing and proofreading/editing skills.
