Communications and Outreach Specialist – Oklahoma State Water Center


Stillwater, OK • Full-Time • Bachelor's Degree Required


The communications and outreach specialist will focus on delivering exceptional products and expertise to Oklahomans and advance our mission of empowering informed decision making and enriching understanding of the state’s most critical water management issues through engagement, education, and actionable science. The incumbent will serve as the primary communication and marketing staff member for the OWRC.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a vibrant and comprehensive communications plan to meet monthly, quarterly, and annual strategic plan goals and expectations.

  • Plan, create and execute social media content and graphics on multiple platforms to cater to public and researcher/water industry professional audiences.

  • Manage, instruct, and train communications students.

  • Plan, develop and execute Extension programs including working with County Extensions Educators to deliver water curriculum.

  • Create and distribute newsletters and high-quality print, digital and video promotional materials.

  • Write news releases, editorial articles, and internal communications to inform stakeholders of advancements in research.

  • Maintain a current website using university CMS.

  • Analyze social media and website analytics to plan future campaigns and assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and return on investment.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with communication staff and water professionals within OSU, other state water centers and national water organizations.

  • Research and coordinate outreach efforts such as conferences, seminars, socials, and congressional visits.

  • Proofread and edit guidance documents, technical reports, publications, or grant proposals.

  • Other duties as assigned in support of the overall goals of the center.


About the Oklahoma Water Resources Center: The Oklahoma Water Resources Center at Oklahoma State University plans, conducts and facilitates research to resolve state and regional water and related land problems, facilitates training of the next generation of water scientists and engineers and disseminates research results to both water managers and the public. Required:

  • Bachelor’s in marketing, journalism, ag education, leadership, communications or related field.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Understanding of communications and marketing strategy and campaign creation and execution

  • Ability to work within existing brand guidelines and designs to deliver cross-platform materials

  • A team player who values collaboration and diversity of opinions and ideas

  • Independent, creative problem-solver

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to ensure a wide variety of projects are delivered on schedule

  • Proven management experience to advise and ensure student learning and growth

  • Experience with Associated Press style editorial writing

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite programs including Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro

  • Awareness of social media platform tools and current practices

  • Willingness to learn and work with others and gain knowledge about water resources

  • Skilled in photography/videography filming and editing

  • Excellent ability to communicate in person, in print and electronically to a variety of audiences


Preferred:

Three years related experience in graphic design, writing, print and electronic content creation, video, photo, social media management, creative/communications, and/or Extension/outreach. Knowledgeable about water/environmental science/natural resources.
